Instagram Tests Unskippable Ads to Boost Engagement and Advertiser Value

Instagram ads

Instagram is well aware that most users scroll through ads without giving them much attention. In response, the app is now testing "unskippable ads" that force users to view a timed countdown before they can continue scrolling through their feed. TechCrunch was the first to report on these tests, noting that some users have already encountered ads labeled with a timed “ad break.”

Confirming the tests to TechCrunch, a Meta spokesperson stated, “We’re always testing formats that can drive value for advertisers. As we test and learn, we will provide updates should this test result in any formal product changes.” This move is similar to YouTube’s ad model, which requires users to watch ads before and during videos, potentially signaling a shift in Instagram's strategy to enhance advertiser engagement and revenue.
